L'avenue des flâneurs
Every year, the City of Montréal closes avenue Mont-Royal from boul. St-Laurent in the "west" to rue Fullum in the "east" to automotive traffic, letting pedestrians, bicyclists, scooterers, rollerbladers, unicyclists, and other fans of active transportation roam free without fear of getting run over.
It always turns into a street festival of sorts. Cafés and restaurants use the street as an extended patio. Chairs, benches, and picnic tables are available for one and all to lounge and loll. It's good for business, good for residents, good for visitors, and good for the city.
